Friday 28 October 7pm The Beacon £7
Listen to the haunting voice of American singer-songwriter Lisa Doscher as she performs songs from her cd, Return Home.
A performer and teacher, Lisa crossed the Atlantic to settle near Wantage some years ago. Before leaving New Hampshire for England, Lisa had sung with the professional acappella group, ‘Olympia’s Daughters’ and explored the U.S, discovering its inspiring musical heritage. “One year I upped sticks,” says Lisa,” and moved from New Jersey to Georgia to live in a community called Koinonia that was very influential in the Civil Rights movement. I volunteered working on the farm but ended up singing impromptu old-time gospel with some of the locals there. These people had so much soul it was contagious. Singing was just a way of life, and this resonated so deeply with who I am and why I sing. We ended up singing most days at lunch for everyone who passed through and even recorded a CD at the end of the year!’
Since moving to the UK, Lisa has fitted in her singing appearances around her teaching commitments. She has recently formed the ‘Singing for Fun’ community choir at the Beacon and continues to play in festivals around the country.
About Lisa’s music
Equal parts revelling and revealing, Lisa’s voice soars to heights and touches depths that have been forgotten, seeping into tiny cracks and highlighting the space between. Raised in the American contemporary folk tradition, Lisa’s influences range from Joni
Mitchell to African American Spirituals, as well as currentsinger-songwriters like the Indigo Girls and Erykah Badu. Lisa draws on these diverse musical roots, weaving together evocative acoustic arrangements with modern rhythms. Her songwriting compass points toward the search for a truly vibrant life, with songs often being composed while walking in the countryside, away from the static of daily life. Lisa is also known to use the audience as a harmony or even a beat-box… an immersive experience in the power of song sure to move and inspire.
