Sunday 30 October The Beacon 2.30pm £8
A treat for Betjeman fans! Some Six or Seven perform a one-hour version of a delightful musical tribute to England’s most popular 20th century poet. Beguiled by Betjeman, originally inspired by the score for ‘Betjemania’, features a selection of Sir John’s verse set mostly to the music of composers John Gould and Donald Swann. These settings and songs enhance the enjoyment of Betjeman’s recurring themes: youth and age: love of people, places- and railways: his Anglican faith and fear and doubt. Why have these poems stood the test of time? Maybe it’s because audiences love poetry with a sense of decency, beauty and humour – beguiling indeed!
Some Six or Seven is masterminded by Brian Garner, Hon Secretary of the Betjeman Society. The group has performed sporadically since 2012 and presented Beguiled by Betjeman at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013. Its present line-up includes a post-graduate LAMDA music student , a Bournemouth University Drama graduate and a former choral scholar at Lincoln Cathedral.
