Thursday, October 29, The Beacon, 2.30pm: She’s been described as ‘The Heston Blumenthal of Perfumes’, but now Lizzie Ostrom is bringing her unique Scratch+Sniff event to Wantage.
Under the alter ego of Odette Toilette, Ostrom will take us on a tour of twentieth century aromas – and tell us the stories of some of the 100 perfumes contained in her book Perfume: A Century of Scents, in all their sniffable glory.
Beginning with the fragrances of the 1900s, Ostrom will unveil the fascinating histories of these now-lost masterpieces of fragrance.
As the century marches forwards, our guide turns to the scents still loved, loathed and recognised by millions of men and women around the world, many of which came from the most celebrated creatives of their day.
Odette Toilette will be diving into the bottles, revealing the wild and wonderful ad-campaigns, bringing to life the visionaries who launched these fabulous fragrances and getting to know the people who wore them.
Since 2010, scent-lover Lizzie Ostrom, aka Odette Toilette, has been turning the world of perfume upside-down with her anarchic, Scratch+Sniff and Vintage perfume events.
Since then she has hosted hundreds of sweet-smelling gatherings with many of the UK’s best-loved art galleries and cultural institutions, including: The Scent of Space with the Royal Observatory Greenwich, an Ancient Greek scent symposium at the British Museum and the first Japanese incense ceremony in the UK.
In much the same way as guests attend a food festival, a wine tasting or a literary salon, Ostrom’s lively, fun and creative events allow the sense of smell to take centre stage.
