Roger Vlitos will transport you back to the times when John and Penelope Betjeman would hob-nob with the glitterati of the day and make social calls on, among others, the Mitfords in Swinbrook, the eccentric household of Lord Berners in Faringdon, and on Gavin Henderson, second Lord Faringdon in Buscot Park.
Saturday, October 25. 11am. The Beacon, Wantage. £6
Using recently discovered letters written by Betjeman to his close friend Henderson, Vlitos – assistant curator of the Faringdon collection housed in Buscot Park – will share the characteristic humour of John and Penelope displayed in them.
You will be able to see their comic sketches and arts & crafts calligraphy; and you will gain a further insight into the preoccupations of the Poet Laureate who turned – over the decades – to Henderson in his heartfelt campaign to save Britain’s architectural heritage.
