University of Oxford poet and creative writing tutor Jenny Lewis will be talking about her latest anthology, Taking Mesopotamia, which follows her father’s Great War experience as a young soldier fighting in ‘Mespot’.
Through original photographs, poetry and witness statements, Jenny looks at how the current crisis in Iraq stems directly from the involvement of British and Indian troops in the region during the First world War. A British and Indian force (Force D) landed at Fao on the Shatt al-Arab River on November 6, 1914, so this is the 100 year anniversary.
Jenny also details her own search for her lost father who died (aged nearly 50) when she was a few months old.
Also a children’s author and songwriter, Jenny’s collection – Taking Mesopotamia – was launched at Oxford Literary Festival.
Sunday, October 26. 4.15pm. The Beacon. Tickets: £6
