Tuesday 25 October The Beacon 11am £3 Put on your woolly hats and warm winter coats and head to the Beacon to welcome the Wantage Mummers for a one-off special event! Usually, local residents only see this motley crew on Boxing Day when they perform their hugely popular traditional folk play in Faringdon, Wantage and Childrey and raise lots of money for charity. However, keen to educate their followers in the historical and literary tradition of mumming, some of the team will be recreating that warm mid-winter glow when they turn up at this year’s Lit Fest.
Old Father Beelzebub will wax lyrical on the history of Mummers’ Plays and Beau Slasher will consider the unique aspects of the Wantage mumming tradition. Their presentations will include live re-enactments! Old Father Beelzebub might also share snippets of his notorious Boxing Day doggerel which he has inflicted on the good people of the Vale for the last 26 years. They will also be providing you with yet another ‘unique opportunity’ to buy a copy of their new book, celebrating 40 years since this ancient folk tradition was revived in the town!
Fab, folksy and fun for all!
