As Wantage is the birthplace of King Alfred the Great, we are thrilled that cultural historian, broadcaster and tv presenter, Dr Janina Ramirez will be talking about her most recent book, The Private Lives of The Saints: Power, Passion and Politics in Anglo-Saxon England. In one of the festival’s must-see events, Janina will explore Anglo-Saxon England told through the secret lives of the saints, including the town’s very own Saint Alfred.
To modern minds, the word ‘ saint’ often conjures up a one-dimensional pious figure. However, in Anglo-Saxon times the saints were the power players, king makers and politicians of the day. By re-examining their lives, through the art and literature that inspired them, the landscape and buildings that surrounded them, the issues that concerned them and the symbolic world that mattered to them, Janina provides a fresh and fascinating view of the history of the Dark Ages.
